Unequal Protection for Youth Sports

By Michelle Sisco July 28, 2015

I have been aware of the dangers of concussions in professional sports but had no idea how prevalent it was in youth sports. That is until my 10-year-old son Drew suffered a concussion while snowboarding even though he WAS wearing a helmet.

As I did a bit of research to find out how to protect my sports-active children in the future, I learned about protective sports equipment made from military-grade materials that are 5x stronger than steel from a company called Unequal Technologies. They do not claim that their products will prevent concussions, but rather reduce the risks of head injuries. Simply put, the technology absorbs and disperses the energy from common sports impacts.

Since Drew already has his favorite baseball batting helmet and a snowboarding helmet, I was concerned about having to buy him a new helmet that also passed the “mirror test.” Instead of buying new helmets, parents can make their current helmets perform better by simply inserting the Unequal pad inside the helmet to absorb and disperse the impact.
The one sport that Unequal has been very popular in is soccer. Since soccer players do not wear helmets, they created the Unequal Halo™ – a stylish headband that offers the same type of protection. Ali Krieger, a defender on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, wore it for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering the second concussion of her career in April – less than two months before the start of the World Cup. Hopefully as other young soccer players see one of the best players in the world wearing this headband, they too will think it’s cool.
