Trick or treating is the highlight of any Halloween celebration and these tips will make sure your family has lots of treats and no tricks.
- Trick or treating should be chaperoned by an adult. Even if your child is going out with a group of friends, confirm that there will be a parent or two along for supervision.
- If you have children who are old enough to trick or treat without an adult, set a safe route and a definite end time. Also reiterate that they should always stay together as a group.
- With or without adults, all trick or treaters should stick to main roads and well-lit paths. Always walk on the sidewalk.
- When crossing the street, only use crosswalks and remember to look both ways!
- If your town sets a curfew for Halloween night, be sure to follow it.
- Remind your trick or treaters to only go to homes with a porch light on and NEVER go into a stranger's home.
- Flashlights, glow sticks and/or reflective tape on costumes and treat bags help your kids be seen after the sun goes down.
- Poisoned or tampered with treats are a rarity, but just to be safe, tell your children to wait until they are home to dig into their treats. A parent or other responsible adult should inspect all candies and toss any that are opened or suspicious looking.
