Home Product Recalls

By Tammy McKillip November 20, 2012
It's the holiday season--a time when families visit loved ones, but if you were planning to camp your infant at Nana's house in this PeaPod Plus Travel Bed, you need to make new sleeping arrangements! The Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with KidCo, Inc., has recalled 220,000 of these tent beds after the death of a 5 month-old infant who rolled off the edge of the inflatable mattress and died with his face pressed into the fabric of the tent. (The actual cause of death is yet to be determined, but suffocation is suspected.) There have also been several reports of children in Canada becoming trapped in the same manner, as well as two infants who ended up underneath the air mattress. So the product appears to be unsafe, and you should stop using it immediately and contact KidCo at (855) 847-8600, or visit their Web site at: www.kidco.com for information on receiving a free repair kit. For a complete listing of model numbers and colors affected by this recall, visit the CPSC page.

Leaky Generator Poses Fire Risk

When the power goes out, as those of us affected by Sandy recently discovered, having a generator to power your home can be a life-saver. But if you are using one of the 7700 Powermate Sx 5500 models sold at Home Depot for around $550, your life and home could be in grave danger. The CPSC is recalling this product after 51 reports that the fuel line can leak, causing a fire and contamination risk to consumers. Specific model numbers affected by the recall are:  K003xxxxxQ through K090xxxxxQ. If you have one of these generators, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY, and contact Pramac America at (800) 445-1805 to receive a free repair kit.

So far, the CPSC has received numerous reports of Avalon gliders breaking, some involving minor injuries. They have also received two reports of the Box 2 glider breaking, though there were no injuries reported. For a complete listing of model numbers affected by this recall, visit the CPSC site. If yours is on the list, stop using it, and contact LaJobi at  (888) 266-2848 for a free replacement glider.

LG Electric Ranges can Burn More than Food

Planning to cook your Thanksgiving turkey in an LG Electric Range this year? You may want to order out instead. The CPSC announced the recall of 161,000 LG electric ranges sold at Best Buy, Home Depot, Sears and other electronic stores throughout the U.S. from 2006-10, due to faulty switches that, when switched off, either fail to turn off, or INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF HEAT going to the burner during use. There have been 80 reports of these incidents, though no injuries have been reported. Still--scary stuff. If you are cooking on this range, STOP! Call (855) 400-4638 to schedule an appointment for a free in-home repair. You may also visit the LG recall Web site for more information.
