Deck the Halls, but Don't Forget Safety

December 16, 2014
If you're making the season (and street) bright by going all out on Christmas lights this year, more power to you (you'll need it!) Just don't forget that all those strings of twinkly, colorful Christmas cheer can also present a fire hazard - a danger that too often leads to tragedy this time of year.

Deck your halls and house safely by following a few of these bright ideas.

Christmas Decoration Safety Tips

  • Purchase only indoor or outdoor lights that have been safety-tested and certified.
  • Follow the instructions on the box, and never use "indoor" lights outdoors.
  • Use plastic or nylon hooks instead of nails, tacks, or staples when securing lights to surfaces.
  • Never overload your electrical circuits by plugging too many lights in at once.
  • Use no more than three strings of lights per extension cord.
  • Inspect all lights carefully prior to hanging them. Look for frayed ends, missing bulbs, and exposed wiring. Do not attempt to repair broken strings of lights! Throw them away, and buy new ones.
  • Use ground fault receptors for outdoor lights.
  • As tempting as it is to leave the lights on all night, don't. A shorted wire could start a fire while your family (and the neighbors) are sleeping.
  • Keep electric wires away from metallic surfaces or ornaments. If your tree is made of metal, it can store an electrical charge from the lights and create an electrocution or shock danger.
