Window Safety Week

By Tammy McKillip March 24, 2015
April 5 to 11 is National Window Safety Week, and Macaroni Kid would like to remind parents that each year, approximately 3,300 children suffer serious injuries and 8 children under the age of 5 die after falling out of a window. The National Safety Council Window Safety Task Force has offered several suggestions to keep kids safe around windows.

Window Safety Tips

  • Keep a close watch on children, and discourage them from playing around windows.
  • Keep all windows closed and latched when children are present.
  • Open double-hung windows from the top, rather than from the bottom.
  • Only open high windows for ventilation when children are present.
  • Never expect a screen to protect your child from falling out the window. They can easily come loose.
  • Stop children from jumping on beds or furniture near windows.
  • Install ASTM-approved safety latches and devices on windows wherever small children are regularly present.
